The AR Denim Project
Josh Rosen

AR: Where did you grow up, and where are you based now?
Josh Rosen: I grew up in Seattle, Washington and have been living in NYC for the past ten years.

How did you get started in what you do?
I have always surfed, snowboarded and skateboarded. When the opportunity to start a surf brand based in NYC came up, I jumped on it. I love this city and the ocean. I always felt like the two complimented each other.

What’s a typical day like for you?
I wake up round 8am. Go for a run. Make a smoothie. Play with my dog. Go to the store. Go to the office. Go to the bar. High five. Laugh. Eat. Sleep.

What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Traveling to Japan, Europe and seeing how the world responds to our brand. It’s so cool to share our love of surfing and NYC with people who don’t surf or live in NYC. There is just something simple and beautiful about sharing experiences with strangers. That and doing exactly what we want everyday (with a few exceptions) feeling liberated from the corporate grind.

What’s some music you find yourself working to recently?
Azelia Banks. Major Lazer. Goyte. Crosby Stills. Nash and Young.

What are your favorite places in and around your neighborhood?
BDDW Gallery. Café Select. Mott Corner. Randolph Beer.

Do you remember your first pair of jeans?
I was born in the late ‘70s… I’m sure I had some tiny bell-bottoms as a toddler, but the first pair I can remember is a very, very baggy pair of Levi’s.

What item(s) do you think will always go well with denim?
Vans. Cons. A white tee.

What are the special things you look for in the denim you like?
Construction, feel and fit are the most important parts of any jean but what I love, and what you can’t really look for, are how the jeans are going to wear in. Every pair of jeans I have worn take on a look and feel of there own.

What’s always in your pockets?
Wallet. Cell. Gum. Keys. Knife. Handkerchief.
